I love getting up in the morning and going to class to learn new things. I love coming-of-age movies, coffee shop chatter, indie pop rock music, and being outside. I love daydreaming while gazing out public transportation windows, singing karaoke into a hairbrush while dancing, and eating vegan banana pancakes while Sunday morning light streams in through the windows. Above all, I love writing.

I love writing plays. I love writing poems. I love writing stories. I love writing screenplays. I love writing essays. I’ve never tried writing a book, but it’s on my bucket list.

I write to explore subjects intertwined with my own experience. I write about coming of age. I write about the search for home as a third culture kid. I write about young women in contexts: historical, social, cultural, and political. I write about the environment and climate justice. I write to be curious about and celebrate the emotional complexities of the human experience.

I write to make sense of this messy thing called life. I write to pay attention. I write for the wonder of self expression. I write to juxtapose. I write to yearn. I write to imagine. I write to remember, with both nostalgia and pain. I write to create a better tomorrow.

I believe that writing and storytelling must live outside of the page in performance for them to be their most impactful. Whether this is slam poetry in an underground jazz bar or a high school production of Shakespeare or a speech at a rally, writing lifted off of paper is what truly moves people. When words come to life, they transform people through the magic of the living, breathing, heart-beating moment. I believe in the power of creative storytelling and programming to cultivate intentional conversation, empathy, and connection.

I believe in the power of togetherness, the power of gathering and witnessing and sharing stories to foster authentic connection and community wellness. For this reason, I feel excited to be involved in processes of new work, where the power of the written word intersects with the power of live arts to create things that did not exist before. I feel excited to be involved in new work that draws on the fusion of various disciplines to create historically, culturally, and politically informed work. I feel excited to be involved in work that expands the definition of theatre, the arts, and multimedia, making it more wide reaching and accessible. I feel excited to be involved in work that reflects its audience, making people feel seen. I feel excited to use my passions for communication, education, youth literacy, and public event programming to celebrate joyful, live connection.

I believe that the act of creation is magical. I believe that the arts are the vital, beating heart of society. I believe in the power of conversation to make the world a better place. I believe that young people, particularly young writers, are the future. I believe in art that is curious about the unsayable mystery that is the human experience. I believe in art that celebrates the irreplaceable experience of living in this broken, beautiful world. I believe that you who are reading this, wherever and whoever you are, have the potential to be a writer and a theatre artist too, if you only would pick up the pen.
