Miniature Painting of a Hoopoe

Current Spiritual Expression

Simply that it exists.

Curator Reflection

The journey and process of buying this object and taking the photos of the artist who painted it points to a sense of change and meaning found in religious borderlands. How do borderlands experienced by spiritual individuals shift their meaning, and how does this differ from the experience of those who identify as a specific religious tradition?

"I bought this painting from a soft-spoken, modest, artist working out of a fort in Rajasthan. Despite the sign forbidding tourists from taking photos of him as he worked, he allowed me a few portraits when he saw I was using a film camera. I suspect he recognised a kinship in both of our attempts to preserve and engage with old forms of art. The hoopoe is a bird of guidance through the spiritual parth in Sufism, a path which ultimately leads the self to the self. The roll of film which had the artist's portraits turned out completely blank."
