Curator Reflection

This art piece painted by the individual demonstrates a clear reimagining and personalization of the imagery of their upbringing. How do other spiritual people adapt images and visual language from religious perspectives to reflect their current perspectives as well as themselves (in this case, literally reflecting their body)?

"I attempt to decipher a woman's body as being absorb by landscape and colonial power of dominating more land and bodies: The conceptual approach I aimed to investigate is the woman's body as a monument, like the Corpus of Christ. History often teaches us to praise the oppressor. As a queer, brown, low-income woman, formerly undocumented, this has kept me from admiring those who came before me and, by extension, myself. In my mash-up, I aim to create meaning through juxtaposition, which inspired me to present the image of Jesus crucified as a brown woman, using a warm color palette of browns, pinks, and muted tones. This image reclaims a colonial and religious concept to reveal how to be a woman is to be crucified and continuously have an apology in our hands for being."
