Bedside Table

Current Spiritual Expression

I would describe myself as agnostic but exploring. Mindfulness practices informed by Buddhism have played a significant role in my spiritual journey as of recent. So have my studies of Black feminist foremothers like Audre Lorde and Black religions writ-large.

Tradition Raised In

Though I was raised by a family of self-described Bible Christians, the practices I was taught to follow are usually legible to outsiders by the umbrella term "Black Hebrew" or "Black Hebrew Israelite.

Curator Reflection

Here, the bedside table acts as a self-made physical space for the individual to inhabit. This prompts consideration of what sorts of physical spaces and locations these individuals might spend time (& perhaps even gather) in. Though it begs the question of what role gathering and physical spaces play in more personalized spiritual practices.

"When I first moved into my current abode, I knew I wanted to build some sort of altar or structure that could ground me as I continued to search for a spiritual practice to call home. After a frantic week of Facebook Market searching, I found this simple bedside table with pink flowers sprawled across its small, single drawer. The other objects on the table — the bunny figurine, the candles, the ash tray, the picture frame — I found through garage sales and thrift shopping. The illustration of flowers I chose for the frame was a gift from a close friend of mine.

I view my bedside table as a space of calm. During hectic times of the quarter, I come home, lie down in bed, and stare out my window in perplexed silence. The bedside table is there in my periphery, providing a warm, stable presence. On quieter days, I may light my candle or incense and read next to it."
